Common sexually transmitted infection by the herpes virus, caused mainly by sexual contact, characterized by painful sores/white blisters in the genital area but can also develop sores in the anus and mouth.  Herpes infection is not curable, after initial infection, virus lies dormant but can reactivate.  Genital herpes can be caused by two types of viruses in the same Herpes family, Type I HSV and Type II HSV. Type I is called simplex virus which causes cold sores, but can spread to genital during oral sex. Type II virus which is most likely to cause genital herpes, very contagious, spreads skin to skin. Common symptoms include but not limited to painful fluid-filled blisters in the genital area, fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes.  Diagnosis is made via physical examination, history taking, blood work.  There is no cure for genital herpes, however, there are medications that can reduce the severity and frequency of outbreaks. Complications include but not limited to increased risk of catching other STD like HIV, risk of transmition to newborn, meningitis.
