RINGWORM (OF THE BODY)

Ringworm of the body is a skin condition in which red ring-shaped rashes appear on the body except for palms of hands, soles of feet, scalp, and groin area. Ringworm of the body is also known as tinea corporis. Fungal infections most commonly cause this condition.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The signs and symptoms for this condition are

  • A ring-shaped scaly area. It can appear anywhere on the body. The most prominent areas of occurrence include the legs, buttocks, arms, and trunk.
  • Itching of mild to moderate to an extent on the scaly area
  • The appearance can be either clear or scaly inside the ring. It may have red scattered bumps
  • A patch of itchy skin that is round and flat
  • Rings that overlap
  • The ring can be raised to a slight extent and expanding

CAUSES

Fungi is the main causative organism of ringworm. The type of fungi depends on the location of the ringworm on the body.

  • Tinea Capitis

This is the ringworm of the scalp. It is most common in children. During the initial phase of the condition, it may appear as scaling on the scalp. It later develops into bald patches with a scaly appearance.

  • Tinea Corporis

This is ringworm of the body and appears in the form of round ring shape all over the body.

  • Tinea Cruris

This is the Jock Itch. It is most common in young teenage boys and men. It usually appears around the groin, buttocks, and inner thighs.

  • Tinea Pedis

This is the Athlete’s foot. It appears on foot. Most common in people who walk around barefoot. Especially in public places such as parks and swimming pools.

TREATMENT

  • Over the counter Anti-fungals

Initially, the treatment of the condition is possible with the help of over the counter antifungals. These are available in the form of lotions, creams, powder, or sprays. With the help of these, the infection can go away in two to four weeks.

  • Prescription-strength Anti-fungals

These medications are for those whose infection remained after over the counter medications. Such medicines are common for areas where the application of topical medication is not possible. These include infection of the scalp; such medications are available in the form of tablets. It includes griseofulvin, fluconazole, and itraconazole.
