Why Symptoms of Injuries Sustained in Auto Accidents Are Often Delayed
Auto accidents can cause many different types of injuries — some more serious than others. In many cases, you can walk away from your accident feeling just fine even though you’re injured. That’s because your body goes into protective mode to allow you to get through your crisis. At MyDoc Urgent Care in Forest Hills and East Meadow, New York, our board-certified team led by Nabil Salib, MD, Dr. Steve Winograd, MD, and Rahaf Rezek, RN, understand the delay of pain from car accident injuries. Once you feel the repercussions of your accident, you should schedule an appointment with us for treatment as soon as possible. We have the expertise and experience to help your body heal.

Injuries you might sustain from a car accident

The trauma your body experiences from an auto accident can be unpredictable. Common injuries include:
  • Open wounds
  • Head pain
  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Whiplash
  • Concussion
  • Broken limbs
  • Spinal cord injury
If you sustain any kind of non–life-threatening injury, our team is fully equipped to handle your medical emergency. If your injury causes your life to be in danger, call 911 immediately.

Reasons for delayed pain

When you injure your body, you have hormones called adrenaline and cortisol that protect you from harm. During a physical crisis, these hormones can cause you to feel little or no pain, increase your energy, push more blood to your muscles giving you strength, and cause an increase in your oxygen flow. Your body can also release endorphins at the same time, which contributes to you feeling calm and in control. Once your adrenaline and endorphins wear off, usually after 20-30 minutes, your body begins to relax and your pain starts to set in.

Diagnosing and treating your injury

Once you feel pain and realize you have an injury, you can come into our office immediately to see one of our providers or schedule a same-day urgent care appointment. Our team gives you a comprehensive examination to rule out or confirm any injuries that need immediate attention. Depending on your symptoms, we may need to test your range of motion in your neck and shoulders, determine your strength and reflexes in your limbs, or order imaging tests. Once we have an accurate diagnosis, we develop a personal treatment plan for you so you can get back to your normal routine of life.
